I'm Maria Fumagalli, the hands behind MF SILVER.
When I think about it, Jewelry making came to me. It found me and unraveled itself to me in almost a superficial way. It was just very unexpected.
I was first introduced to metal smithing in 2005, after being in the country for only two years. It was almost an escape. Times were intense when moving here from Brazil and every single interaction was a learning experience. I was just trying to communicate. But It was in the studio where I could fully express myself and experiment while still learning the language and absorbing the american culture.
In the beginning it was a spark towards another passion, just play. I enjoyed the learning process and had interest, but I didn't take it seriously. Even though I had purchased some beginner tools I wasn't truly invested. So years went on, I traveled and fell in love with other things, too.
In 2012 I arrived on Kauai, Hawaii with no plans. The Garden Isle with it´s magical beauty and simple way of living captured my heart. People say that the island chooses it´s people. Two years later I had a job, a house, had met Mike already... I decided it was time to actually move here, and bring my belongings other than what my backpack could fit. I brought my tools.
It was one of the smartest things I've done! Jewelry making is rooted in me. The more I invest, learn and practice new techniques, the more I feel this was meant for me. I can't get enough of it!! It was almost 10 years later, but nothing like a little Youtube to help your memory. That's how I got back, by watching videos and a lot of trial and error.
In January of 2016 MF SILVER was launched and you could find my creations and I at the craft fairs throughout the island. After so much hard work and dedication, I opened doors one year later. My little kiosk on the South side of Kauai is a dream come true. It was there that all the pieces were made and where I had the joy of meeting some of you personally.
Another big challenge came across shortly after the shop was opened, when I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. It flipped my life upside down! I had to close doors and leave everything behind to stay in Brazil for about a year during my treatment. My hometown is my safe harbor and where the family love and connections could provide me with the best care. But my heart is on island and my greatest motivation to go through this treatment was to go back home and pick up where I left off.
In November of 2018 I returned home and started creating once again. Shortly after, MF SILVER moved to Anchor Cove Shopping Center, just across the street. With much more room to show, I decided to also bring along the work of other local artists like Abe Kowitz, Jock Goodman, Seamus, Sarah Sweet Scrubs, to name a few. We are not only a shop but a small gallery as well showcasing mostly Hawaiian Made products.
I feel honored to be here, to be able to offer you a little piece of pure love that comes from within and to represent other artists alike. To be a part of moments that you'll cherish for a long time. Thank you for allowing this connection to happen and know that I'm deeply appreciative of your support. For it allows me to live my dream.
